Both of these men clearly have very strong opinions on
today’s education system. While Lewis
Black aims more for the humor and entertainment angle, Mike Rose lays out an
actual plan. Both men clearly disagree with the way our school system is run
nowadays, and I have to agree. I hadn’t really thought about it before these
two were introduced to me. But it does seem that education today is more about
politics than the ACTUAL education of our children. The kids are the ones
suffering, and they suffer at the hands of politicians and “educational
leaders”. The only thing these people care about is the bottom line. They care
more about the schools’ economies than they do about the students, and it shows
in Lewis’ video when he talks about the school that cost ½ a billion dollars to
build.
As stated in Mike Rose’s article, the main thing that we
should focus on is giving our children an engaging and challenging education.
Worrying about test scores, and public schools vs. charter schools… none of
that matters if the students aren’t learning. I think it’s really sad that the
focus is no longer on the students. If the kids were to sit down and watch all
the debates about education, they might think of it differently. They might
realize that it’s not really about them after all. It’s all about the people
who want to be the best financially and in the eyes of the public. They can
have their big budgets and their fancy schools, but if the children aren’t
learning, they have nothing.
