Considering all of the movies and readings we’ve done so far
this quarter, there is a lot I would change about the K-12 curriculum if I had
the chance. I’ve said it from day one: that students need to be inspired. Not
to say that there aren’t some amazing and fantastic teachers out there already,
but I think that the curriculum for the TEACHERS needs to be adjusted, as well
as for the students. While students need to be inspired, and also be allowed to
embrace their passion and imagination, teachers need to learn how to help their
students accomplish it. Some schools are cutting P.E. and fine arts departments
due to budget cuts. Other schools are pushing strictly academia because they
want higher test scores. This doesn’t work. If a student has the desire to be a
doctor, a chemist, an astronomer… it may do just fine for them, but what about
the others? What about the ones who dream of being a dancer, a musician, or the
next Van Gogh? (Hopefully without the ear incident). There is no more room in today’s education
system for the ones who are different; the ones who can see with more than
their eyes, and dream of being extraordinary.
I would change all that. Make sure that each student is
challenged and engaged in WHATEVER they find to be their passion. Educators are
not just teaching them simple math, science and English. They are supposed to
prepare them for whatever their life will become. And if their interests and
goals are tossed aside for the sake of higher test scores and bigger budgets, then
we have all failed.
