Mr. Escalante and Ms. Watson were not that different either.
Like he and Mr. MacFarland, the only differences appeared to be in their stature,
home life, educational experiences, etc. To anyone else, those are big
differences; but to these teachers, it was nothing at all.
Similarities:
Ms. Watson was very big on education, just like Mr.
Escalante. She got her Art students to think outside the box. She taught them
that art is subjective, and while one person may think a painting is morbid or
crude, someone else could find that same painting to be beautiful and creative.
One thing that they both had in common: Their first days (and for a short
period following) they were not greeted with eager students willing to learn.
They were met with hostility, a lack of faith, and a blatant disregard for
their teaching capabilities.
Differences:
When she taught her first class, the students knew everything
she had to teach. They were calling out answers before she had gotten the
chance to finish asking the questions. Mr. Escalante’s students didn’t know
anything at all. Some of them couldn’t even speak English. And while Mr.
Escalante had the respect and support of his fellow teachers, Ms. Watson did
not. She was constantly ridiculed for not being married, for having gone to
state school instead of private school, for being from California… you name it.
Good work--variations on a theme! Very nice!
